DNSBOX100 is a hardened device, with a purpose-built Linux secure appliance architecture and an inbuilt firewall. There is no network access to the operating system, all unnecessary applications and OS components have been removed, access to unused ports denied and buffer overflows eliminated. Remote admin is via secure SSL encryption.
DNSBOX100 runs entirely from CompactFlash. With no disks in the system, the cause of 90% of hardware failures is eliminated, making this appliance 10x more reliable.
There are two CompactFlash cards used in the system. The first is bootable and contains the operating system (Linux, based on Slackware) and is mounted read-only at all times (other than when being patched). The second contains all settings and DNS data.
DNSBOX100 comes pre-installed, with a simple admin GUI. That means there’s no need to install OS and DNS server software, to patch the software for security vulnerabilities or to acquire and build BIND. With DNSBOX100, OS and BIND software upgrades are taken care of, eliminating another headache
In addition to incorporating a number of security features designed specifically for a dedicated slave appliance, DNSBOX100 also supports HA load-balanced clustering.
